Where and when were you born?
Houston, TX, on Feb. 4, 1962.
Are you right- or left-handed?
Both. I eat lefthanded, carry things mostly in my left hand, but write with my right.
Where did you learn most of your skills?
Yates High School, where I graduated in 1980, had a radio station, and I received most of my initial training there. It was while I was in college that I got my first part-time job at a small Contemporary Christian station, and honed my skills from there. In the 15 years I've been at Majic, I've had a chance to work in a variety of positions, which has made me more versatile.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I think I always knew I wanted to be in radio, from the time my parents gave me my first radio when I was about seven. I thought it was so fascinating that music and conversation was coming out of this little speaker from miles away, and I wanted to be one of those deejays someday.
As a child, what were your favorite activities?
My blindness didn't stop me from enjoying sports. With some modifications, I was able to play baseball, run track, swim, and compete on my school's wrestling team (although I was not any good at that). I also played the piano for a number of years, and enjoyed reading.
Describe any influences in your past that led you to do the things you do today.
My family always supported me in pursuing my dreams. They never once said, 'you can't do this.' Though others doubted that I could ever achieve success as a radio personality, my parents always encouraged me, and did what they could to help me get to where I wanted to be.
What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?
Getting married was certainly one of the biggest highlights of my life, and achieving my goal of working in radio was a dream come true. But by far the most important event of my life occurred when I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior at age 19. He has helped me through many trials and has seen me through the good times as well. Without Him guiding my life, I wouldn't be where I am today.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I struggled for over 10 years to work at a high-profile station, and that opportunity came when I arrived here at Majic in 1990. I endured the usual layoffs, ownership and format changes that are associated with the radio industry, and even spent almost three years without a permanent full-time job. But coming to Majic was by far the biggest break I've had, and I feel proud to be a part of its success and heritage.
When was the time you were the most frightened?
When my son was born, he had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, and wasn't breathing. The doctors had to revive him, and he's a healthy boy. But after I realized what was happening, I never felt more scared.
What is the most embarrassing thing ever to happen to you?
When I was about 10, I went to my P.E. class, got dressed, and came out to the gym. I was in such a hurry, I didn't realize I had forgotten to put on my gymshorts, so all I was wearing was my shirt, tennis shoes, and jock strap! The coach spanked me a good one on the behind with a large paddle, and I immediately realized my mistake.
What is your greatest fear?
Roller coasters
Have you started your own family? If so, describe them. If not, do you want to? Why or why not?
I've been married for 16 years, and have a 15-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. They both enjoy Scouts, and my daughter Jessica is going to begin learning to drive soon. James is a big Ut football fan, and loves to entertain people.
What is/are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
I enjoy reading, sports, and doing things with my family.
What is your favorite food?
I love Mexican food. I could eat it every day and never get tired of it.
What, if anything, do you like to read?
I like mostly fiction: westerns, mysteries, spy and espionage, and war novels.
What is your idea of good entertainment (consider music, movies, art, etc.)?
I have always enjoyed a wide variety of music; oldies, some current pop, jazz, and country.
What are your pet peeves?
People talking with their mouth full, people who talk rude to you for no reason, and people who throw their stuff all over the floor or furniture.
What is your greatest strength as a person?
My greatest strength has to be my versatility in my work. I've learned to do more than just one job, rather than relying on one position or skill.
What is your greatest weakness?
I let the small things get to me all too often. If I could be less anxious about the little things, or things I have no control over, I'd be a lot better off.
What goal do you most want to accomplish in your lifetime?
I want to see my children grow up and become independent and successful in whatever they wish to pursue. I want them to have even better opportunities than I did when I was growing up.
If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, name three things you would do in the time you had left?
I would make amends with anyone I have argued with or offended, spend as much time as I could with my family, and try to make sure my house was in order. |
